What changes on November 5, 2026¶
Today, thousands of projects use Zensical. On November 5, 2026, Zensical 0.1.0 will begin a dependable release line. That same day, Studio will launch with Free, Pro, and Team editions, Spark Community will open to individuals, and Material for MkDocs will receive a six-month end-of-life extension, with critical maintenance continuing until May 5, 2027.
In a nutshell¶
- Zensical and all our Open Source projects will remain free forever. Your content will always be yours – portable source files you can host, build, and publish anywhere.
- We are building beyond a static site generator. We're evolving Zensical into a modular and fast build system for technical content, starting with the MkDocs projects you already have.
- Material for MkDocs EOL extended until May 5, 2027. This gives organizations six more months to test Zensical and prepare for a controlled production rollout.
- Studio and Spark allow us to sustain our work. Studio supports professional authoring; Spark connects practitioners and gives organizations direct access to our team.
- Studio launches Free, Pro, and Team editions on November 5. Free supports everyday authoring; Pro adds advanced workspace intelligence; Team adds document governance.
- Spark opens to individuals. Our Discord remains open to everyone; Spark offers a focused professional community for individuals and direct access to our team for organizations.
Open Source, free forever¶
Open Source is not a launch strategy for us. It is how we have built software together with our users for more than a decade. Material for MkDocs was developed in public. Today, about 84,000 public GitHub repositories depend on it, and the number is still growing.
Zensical and every project we release as Open Source are MIT-licensed and free to use. The Open Source stack is the foundation of everything we are building. Your content stays in portable source files, and the stack gives you everything you need to build and publish it on your own terms.
Studio is a closed-source application with free and paid editions, while Spark is offered through paid memberships. Both are entirely optional, and together they fund our team and Open Source work. We do not charge for sites, readers, builds, publishing, deployment, or access to your content. The business supports the Open Source work – not the other way around.
What we are building¶
Zensical is evolving from a static site generator into an integrated build system for technical content. It starts with MkDocs projects and Python Markdown, so teams can adopt it without rewriting their content.
Every layer of the integrated stack works from a unified model of the project. Zensical uses that model to rebuild only the content affected by a change. Studio brings the same model into your editor, helping you navigate, validate, and safely change connected content.
That shared model lets Zensical grow beyond site generation into a system for content reuse, variants, structured authoring, governance, and publishing to websites, PDFs, and other channels. Our roadmap lays out how these capabilities build on one another over time.
The path to 1.0¶
Zensical already builds production sites. Version 0.1.0 marks its transition out of the 0.0.x alpha series and begins a dependable release line. Zensical will remain on the 0.x release line while we shape its module system and ecosystem together with the community.
Our public APIs will evolve as we learn what extensions and integrations need in practice. All changes will be deliberate. Compatibility is a core design constraint, and when an interface must change, we will provide a clear migration path.
Do not wait for 1.0. Build with Zensical today and shape its future with us. Once our public APIs have proven stable over time, version 1.0 will simply formalize that maturity. It will be a low-drama release, not the point at which Zensical becomes ready to use.
Material for MkDocs¶
We are extending critical maintenance for Material for MkDocs by six months, through May 5, 2027. This gives you more time to evaluate the migration path, test Zensical with your existing projects, and plan a controlled production transition.
Commercial offering¶
Studio's paid editions will join Spark in funding our work:
- Zensical Studio brings workspace intelligence to Zensical and MkDocs, keeping links intact as you rename and move connected content across the project. That lets you work faster, confident that connected content stays correct.
- Zensical Spark brings individuals and organizations closer to what we're building. Members get early access to new features and a direct voice in our work; organizations can also rely on us for direct support. Spark Community makes it affordable for individuals to participate.
Studio and Spark can be used independently. Studio's editor integrations are Open Source.

Our commitment¶
November 5 marks exactly one year since Zensical's initial release and a major milestone in work that began in 2024. We know that stewarding Open Source software people rely on comes with responsibility. You deserve clarity, time to plan, and control over your transition.
- No surprises. We will communicate important dates, product boundaries, and prices before they take effect, and explain what changes and why.
- No forced migration. Existing projects will continue to work. Your content remains portable, Studio remains optional, and you decide when and how to move.
- We listen. Test Zensical with your current project, report blockers on our issue tracker, explore our public backlog, or talk to us if your organization needs help planning.
We're excited about what's ahead.
